Footfall B edit - Rh 483

about

During the several years I lived on the second floor of a lovely apartment block I became conscious of how percussively aware my climbing the stairs was becoming. I would deliberately tap the steel rails and direct my deliberate footfall in counter position. I found myself composing the sound of the walk - into a short but definite work - varying it each time. A swathe of variation and possibility. Surely a bigger work was possible from the timings and deliberations of the materials of this progression - my Footfall - my stick - the Floors and stairs - the rails and the beautiful ambiance of this really Big hard space. Dozens of types of sound to produce and punctuate - a piece by sequence to construct.

Footfall A - Rh 482 is the result of several such operations - cutting - timing and phasing the layers - resulting in a progressive whole with distinct and startling areas of textural Variation.

Footfall B - Rh 4823 is a set of alternative operations - fundamentally on the same materials but taking their editing protocols in differing directions producing very different works. So which one was 'Footfall' ? I had only planned for one work but had two viable options. They had been A and B in the Studio so that they stayed -.B I left as 'B edit' because I felt it was an accompanying piece rather than the main act. This is one of Several Percussion projects I recorded on the fabric of the building before I left.
