An unexpected addition to the family - Qualium - Rh 590 - subtitled 'Sonata for Tuned Metal no. 4. A piece born to fill hole that wasn't there in the first place. Whilst working on an album update, for my British Library Edition of my works, I was looking at pieces for a wonderful steel vessel. I bought for its tone quality - solely as an instrument - from which I made the Metal percussion music albums no. 8 [the Inventions for] and MPm 9 [Codal]. I wanted to do more work with this Vessel. - a heavy grade, pressed steel container that rang like a bell. I saw the need for a companion piece for Codal to 'fill' a short album. So I spent some time with it in the studio and got what became Quarlium - Rh 580 - works catalogue 580. Way better than I imagined - this was a really interesting piece - a real outing for this instrument - and for me as a Percussionist. Harking back to my 3 Sonatas for tuned Metal in previous groups - 'Tuned' here meaning polytonalt - 'to give Voice.' What I had here was a 4th Sonata for tuned metal - a set of inventions in itself !The hole I perceived - a space on an old album was infact already filled ! So I had created an album length piece in search od an Album - MPm 22. As for the title Quarlium - my coinage - a state or position of the mind - I presume..

Though Dreyblatt’s compositional method is largely complex, his songs have the hard-hitting simplicity of rock 'n’ roll. Bandcamp Album of the Day Aug 15, 2023
